Keiki Movie Day 2009

There was a good turnout for RPJ’s Third Annual Keiki Movie Day for special needs kids and their families. Children from Shriner’s Hospital and Special Olympics attended the project, which was sponsored this year by Lifetouch Photography. Many thanks to all who attended, and our sincerest gratitude to all of the volunteers who helped make this day great. A special thanks to Stanley Chang for sending Santa Claus our way.

A November to Remember

New Faces Fuel New and Traditional Chapter Projects

November was a busy month for RPJ from the United Cerebral Palsy Association’s Annual Dessert Fantasy Fundraiser at the Pacific Beach Hotel to the Grand Slam Sunday Tennis Challenge at Ala Moana Beach Park to the first ever Phoenix Fun Day project at Likelike Elementary School to the traditional Thanksgiving Meals-on-Wheels service for Lanakila Pacific. There was also the Turkey Shoot Coed Volleyball Tournament at Halawa Gym and the Turkey Bowl Coed Flag Football game at Keehi Lagoon Beach Park. Last but not least, we elected a new board of directors at the November General Membership Meeting at Maple Garden and cheered on one of RPJ’s finest at the Junior Chamber International World Congress in Tunisia. Here is a list of notable names who spearheaded a November to remember:

  • Winston Chow: Took charge of the Dessert Fantasy, the RPJ Facebook and will soon take charge of RPJ itself as the 2010 Chapter President.
  • Michelle Isa & Jennifer Slaton: Two of the chapter’s newest members; Michelle, Jennifer, and their teammates from the HiLife Volleyball Club helped at the Dessert Fantasy, Phoenix Fun Day and Meals-on-Wheels; Michelle is also the chair for both the Thanksgiving and Christmas Meals-on-Wheels events.
  • Rebecca Soon: The Americas international public speaking champion proudly represented RPJ, Hawaii and the Americas at the World Public Speaking Championship at the JCI World Congress in Tunisia, Africa.
  • Anthony Higa: The lead for the chapter’s Adopt-a-School Day projects at Likelike Elementary School. Phoenix Fun Day was Anthony’s first major event as the lead organizer. He was also elected as the 2010 Executive Vice President.
  • Chad Kawashima: Another new member who led the dental hygiene workshop at the Phoenix Fun Day at Likelike Elementary School.
  • Kevyn Yonesaki: Provided the venue for November’s General Membership Meeting at Maple Garden.
  • Rica Castaneda: Organized two great tennis outings at Ala Moana, and will also take over as the 2010 Management Development VP.
  • Congratulations also go to the team led by RPJ’s David Shimamoto for winning the Turkey Shoot tourney. Chapter member Kalani Gasper’s team took second in the tournament, and his flag football team won the Turkey Bowl.
  • Many thanks also go out to RPJ associate members Jon Nishihara, Lila Johiro, Jeff and Janice Suzuki, Kern Nishioka and Gayle Takasaki.

SUNDAY LEAGUES POSTPONED

Alternative Venues Being Sought

Yesterday Palolo Gym Director Bert Fishman informed RPJ President Eve Epitome that the gym cannot remain open on Sundays past 5:00 pm until further notice. The weekend gym rental time was slashed due to city and county budget cuts. Fishman and the chapter are working together to find a solution, and in the meantime, alternative league venues are being sought. Koko Head Gym (home of the chapter’s Monday league) has tentatively offered Wednesday nights to RPJ, but any opening at the Lanakila Gym will not be available until next year. Another option may be shorter leagues similar to the four-week Saturday league at Manoa Gym. All Sunday team captains, please inform your players. Any new developments will be sent out as soon as possible. Please leave a comment here on the blog or e-mail risingphoenixjaycees@yahoo.com if you have any other alternative venue ideas, and all members are encouraged to attend the Thursday, November 12th General Membership Meeting at Maple Garden.

Flag Football and Coed Volleyball Tourney Set for Tomorrow

For all of you sports junkies, RPJ is offering up two events tomorrow. At 9:30 am, RPJ kicks off another coed flag football game at Keehi Lagoon. No BBQ this time, but we’ll have a cooler of cold drinks and a tent up. And while there’s a Sunday league bye, the volleyballs will still be flying at Palolo Gym. From 5:00 to 9:00 pm, there will be a coed volleyball tournament so come down and cheer on all of the players.

Dessert Fantasy Drivers Needed

It’s time again for the Rising Phoenix Jaycees to help out the United Cerebral Palsy Association with their Dessert Fantasy fundraising event! This year’s event will be Sunday, November 1st in the Grand Ballroom at the Pacific Beach Hotel (the one with the huge aquarium).

We need help delivering desserts from the restaurant/bakery to the hotel.  We need 9-10 teams. Each team consists of two people, one car, and two pickup locations (usually in the same area).  One person can wait in the car while the other picks up the desert in case there is no parking. The car should be air conditioned to keep the desserts cool.  The pickups are usually between 9am to 11am.

RPJ Executive VP Winston Chow is the contact person, and he will give the locations as soon as the United Cerebral Palsy Association releases them, which is usually the week before the event. Volunteers must coordinate the pickups with the restaurant/bakeries to make sure that the desserts are ready on time.  The best part is that all the volunteers can go into the Dessert Fantasy after the general public goes in, usually 10 minutes after the start of the event.

Please e-mail Winston if you are interested in volunteering for this great event.  If you already have your team of two, even better. First-timers, new RPJ members and associate members get first priority.

ABOUT DESSERT FANTASY: Attendees pay $25 to get in to eat all the dessert samplings they want and vote for their favorite. There is also a huge silent auction area.  If there are enough leftovers, event organizers sell dessert boxes ($5-10 per box) that attendees can fill with whatever will fit into it. The event itself runs for two hours from 1pm to 3pm.

Painting Party…Adopt-A-School Style

Thomas, Julie and Dawn take a break from painting.

Thomas, Julie and Dawn take a break from painting.

Part Two of Project Scheduled for November 19th

On Adopt-A-School Day, October 11, 2009, 13 RPJ members and friends repainted safety lines, handicap parking stalls, and a hopscotch-like game at Likelike Elementary School. Likelike was one of two schools that Hawaii State Schools Superintendent Patricia Hamamoto picked for adoption.

The painting party was part one of the chapter’s Adopt-A-School Day Project. The second part will be on November 19th at the school where we’ll set up info booths to teach students basic dental and personal hygiene. We’re also trying to bring in health consultants to speak to students and parents about immunizations. The topics were selected by the teachers. Check out more pics after the jump.
